SignWriting is a script that has been developed to write down sign languages. In a same way as conventional languages are based on the spoken language, SignWriting is based on the signed language. Around many of the sign languages, a culture has grown. This culture is ephemeral as preservation has been in recording movies. With SignWriting it is now possible to write grammatically correct the sign languages of this world. With the release of the SignPuddle 1.5 that was released end of March 2007, the ability to write grammatically correct text has become possible to do with computers.

In the ISO-639-3 the most relevant sign languages got their recognition. It is however known that many more sign languages exists. The WLDC would not only seek to find recognition for these linguistic entities, it also wants to promote the use of SignWriting and thereby strengthen the use of sign languages and also help preserve the existing culture that they represent.
